A Year in New York

I thought this appropriate to post for my one year mark of living here.

I love when I get a glimpse of how large this city really is. It's different when you actually live in the middle of this monstrosity and it just becomes your every day life. I love the random moments on the 7 train where you get to see the skyline, or when your in a cab and get to see the city in a whole new way.

I don't want to ever leave this place. Can't everything I want to do in life be right here so I never have to go?!

Like Nicole said , make it full screen and turn the sound up. Hopefully you can start to see why I am in love with NY.

One year ago
literally this instant,
I was on a plane flying to NYC.

I sat down to really take this past year in, and it was one of those times where you have this wave of "holy shiz, what just happened?" and then you can't breathe for a second because of the overwhelming-ness of the situation. And then you eat some cold left over dominos pizza in the fridge.

Have I really made it a whole year? #notreallife. There is literally no way to bundle up all of my thoughts and feelings over the past year. So much love for this incredible experience. Hardest yet absolutely and completely most rewarding time of my life.

The people i've met.. ohhhhh the people! If you only knew the people.
These as some incredible human beings.
They don't come greater than these ones I gots.
But really. A place is only as good as the people you know.
And this place is reealll real good.

Living here has made my love and appreciation for this gospel grow ten million gagillion folds. Its not only something that I incorporate into my life. It IS my life.

I love how the process works of being able to grow and learn and become new people. I have changed in every aspect of my life. The picture is broader. And I am happy.

I cant wait to see how wide the picture is in another year.

Aubrey and her family are also adopting me this weekend for Christmas and I am so excited to see that adorable little town and family of hers (again)

I read this post earlier in the week and it's surprised me how much its come up in my conversation. Lately I've been having a hard time transferring exactly what this brain of mine is thinking into coherent words and usually it just seems to come out wrong. There are parts in this blog post that are exactly what I have been feeling and I am very grateful someone else could put it into words for me. Go here to read the whole post if you'd like. It's lengthy and he drills it into you pretty hard but it's a really good reminder I think for everyone.

This happened exactly one year ago today. whaaaa? New York has officially been in my life for a year! It was exactly a year ago I decided to move out here with out a plan, with only a shannon and measly amount of money in my bank account.

I had no idea a year ago that the decison I made on that random Tuesday in November would turn me into the person I am today. And to be honest, I still can't believe that I live here.

I am grateful for New York
and I am grateful for everything wonderful that comes with that amazingly, beautiful, fantastic word.

I went for a walk today along the Hudson
which has quickly become one of my favorite spots in the city.
If you can get over this fact (which just might be my favorite article title of all time),

What would pursuade almost 2 million people to live on a island the size of my pinky finger? (No, that number doesn't even included the millions and millions of people who commute into the city everyday or any of the tourists.)

This is how my brain see's it. It's like everyone in the world knows there is this secret when it comes to NY. But does anyone even know the secret? No. Even the people who experience NY every day don't know what the secret is but the fact that the secret is there makes this place feel almost magical. Cheesy? Embrace it.

And I think if that myth of a secret was taken away, we would all realize how insane we've been for putting up with the cesspool subways, and almost 1000 dollars every month to rent a shared room (which I am positive was a shoe box when the landlord first said "yeahhh this looks like something someone would pay thousands of dollars to live in, lets kick the little mice out of their home and shove 4 fully sized humans into it, they'll fit!) when we could be paying off a house with that kind of money,

But I've been sucked in.
I've been sucked in despite the possibility of contracting something fatal everytime I step onto a subway.
Despite when step outside in the mornings and take a deep breath, it always ends in me gagging a lil' due to the giant pile of trash that sat overnight and made the whole street smell.

There is a ridiculously long list of all the great things I love about Manhattan and normally here is where I would insert that list but this post is already waaay to long so I will save that post for another day.

Straight up?
Living here makes me happy. It pushes me every.single.day. Sometimes on the really really hard days I day dream about moving back to Utah where its easier and I wouldn't have to work as hard because Utah is my comfort zone, but the results that come from me pushing myself every day are incredible.

That picture explains how I feel about NY. Beauty in the Cesspool. And I don't think that will ever change.

I've listened to this podcast twice now.

This man is absolutly incrediable.

He lost his wife and two kids in a car crash involving a drunk driver.

Not to mention he and his wife lost five children previous to the crash.

The things he has gone through makes the stress in my life seem this small.

Heavenly Father is patient with me. He is kind and forgiving when I make the same mistake for the thousandth time. He knows every thing about me. Every weakness, every imperfection. & yet somehow he still manages to love me and bless my life in countless ways.

He is blessing me with this wonderful place called NYC, and I don't think I could ever explain how grateful I am.

Chelsea Babbitt said it better than I could:

I am truly happy. Not for the moment, not for a time, but for everything.

I am thankful for everything that has brought me to this point with no end and no amount or number calculated could describe how happy I am to be exactly where the Lord has brought me to right at this exact point in my life.

Its been all emergency preparation/hurry and grab water flashlights and canned goods at the grocery store before it runs out here in NYC. I am pretty sure these past few days city has been having a collective panic attack all together. Between this hurricane and the earthquake a few days ago its been one strange week out here.

But all is well my friends. Me and my apartment are well stocked up for this weekend. We have a prime spot in my roommates room to watch the storm from(a stairwell just in case things get nasty), and plenty of junk food to keep us happy all weekend.

As much as I don't think anything is going to happen, i know prayers are always a good thing. So all my homies in the 801, please keep the east coast in your thoughts this weekend!

Over the weekend I assisted on a wedding in the Catskill Mountains where we took a chair lift up to where the ceremony took place. It was incredible how great it felt getting out of the city, even if it was for work and just for 24 hours. I love my city but I've been missing nature in my life and central park is just not cutting it.

I don't think I can say this enough:

Filming weddings is what i want to do for the rest of my life.

If I had a rooftop I would be shouting this from it.

I was so focused on the wedding I didn't even think about getting a picture for the blog so this has resulted in me stealing two pictures of the weekedn from Josh's FB page. Go check his stuff out, he does not disappoint.

This quote is a subject that keeps coming up in conversations lately and it pretty much sums up what i have been feeling lately. My experience out here has been, well, lets just say it's had it's ups and downs. Until my move a couple months ago into Manhattan, I could not wait unitl the moment Heavenly Father said "Okay Madi, you've learned what you needed, now come back to Utah." I basically gave the big man upstairs an ultimatum (thats awful I know) and said if things don't get better, I don't care what you think I am packing my bags and going home.

In Logan I felt like life could not get better and i've come to realize how unique my experience was there. And dispite me saying "New York?? But life is already perfect why do I need to move half way across the country? Can't I just learn what you would teach me out there, here?" He got me out of my comfort- blanket-utah and knew that this is exactly what i needed. Sending me out here only knowing one person was the only way I could have grown a love, friendship, and appreciation for Him. This is my alone time with Heavenly Father, to get to know Him and myself a little better.

So here we go, i think it's time and i'm just gonna say it.

I am HAPPY here.

Thats kind of a big deal if you didn't know.

I put my move back to Utah date for January and was counting down the days until it came, but I don't know anymore. The closer it gets the more I love it here and I can't see myself moving away so soon. I HAVE SO MUCH MORE I NEED TO LEARN!!! January will mark a year of me living here and thats just not enough time. At least not enough time for me.

I would say i'm about 60/40.

but i kind of went all domestic ape shiz and made this skirt out of two old t-shirts.
say whaaa?
that's right, i did it and i would do it again. (said it hard core thug voice)
listen if i can do it, you can do it ten times better.
i don't sew. infact i don't do anything domestic like very often.
but once I saw this on pinterest and saw how cute these clothes are that this girl makes herself,
i thought i would give it a try.

i am very pleased with the result.
and it has sort of turned me into a sewing machine.
baha no pun intended.

if any of my other projects turn out i will post them but lets just go ahead and assume that all things domestic are going to stop here.

also i think something is definitely wrong with me because on saturday i also went running *cue gasps* for the first time in years. YEARS. but i just figured with central park being a block away i couldn't not take advantage of it. that and every time i look in my closet my running shoes that i've had for 6 months and haven't used yet, are staring back up at me. And I figured they would stop looking at me in disgust for not using them and choosing to eat chipotle instead if i took them out once. but i am sad to report its only gotten worse. i sort of enjoyed the whole running thing *cue second round of gasps* and i am now just itching to take them out again.

I don't know whats happening to me but it's freaking me out a little bit.

6 months suckas!

Does it seem as amazing to you as it does to me that I have already been out here for 6 months?
6 months?? That's 2/3rds of a pregnancy. Now for reals, does anyone else relate time to a pregnancy? Cus I plan my life in increments of pregnancies.

This whole NY experience, yet incredibly difficult, has been life changing. I am so grateful for how blessed I was to find a job out here and have been given the opportunities I was. I am a completely different person than I was 6 months ago. And I know that's just how life works. We are constantly changing and growing, and hopefully in all of that, trying to become better people. And maybe this is just another one of lifes many ah-ha moments where i look back and realize how far I've come.
But I am very grateful for these moments.

I am grateful for being in this stage of life. It feels like I am always looking and hoping to be somewhere else or be doing something different or what I have is not quite good enough. I mean come on, I live in New York City, one of the greatest cities in the world. I don't know how much better it can get, right?

It's a completely different experience living in Manhattan than in Brooklyn. And yes there are great things about both places and Brooklyn will always hold a piece of my heart but can I just say that I am loving Manhattan. I love my apartment. I love my wonderful roommates. And I am loving experiencing this part of NY. Please, do yourself a favor and move out here with me. You can sleep on my couch. And if you play your cards right maybe even in my bed.. with me in it..

My Familia comes to visit tomorrow, FOR A WHOLE BLESSED WEEK. I am S.T.oked.

I looked in mail box and found this little baby gleaming up at me. I opened it on the elevator ride up to my apartment and was freaking out. I'm sure the people in there with me thought I was a sane person.

Since getting scorched at the beach on saturday

I have been confined to my apartment, besides going to work.

Partly due to the passing out/throwing up feeling i get when i walk outside,

partly due to the feeling my skin gets when the sun is on it (ouch),

but mostly due to my beet colored body
and not wanting to been seen by the human race.

I am not kidding when I say

this is the worst sunburn i have ever experienced

in my entire years of being alive.

My face is starting to peel

and I am sort of starting to feel like I am turning into another creature.

So due to my condition tonight has been a very quite night in my apartment

with only arrested development
and the newest episode of the bachelorette to comfort me.

My night became a million times better when on skype this little lady came to see me

right after taking her bath to give me the happiest smile that literally melted my heart.

She also tried to hug me (i.e the computer screen) quite a few times as well.

just because it plays on my ipod non stop lately.

right in front of us was the path that all the celebrities walked on to get to their spot on stage,

Brooklyn has been my home for almost 6 months now, and it has become the only way i know how to live.

I know to take the G to the 7 to get to work, or if it's a thursday or friday, G to the E to the 6.

I know I have to walk out the door exactly an hour before work and this puts me there 20 minutes early but if i leave just a few minutes later i will miss the subway and by the time the next one comes and I will be 5 mintues late to work. 20 minutes early.. or 5 mintues late has been the battle in my life.

I know that once i get off the subway I can start singing in my head the street names in order and once i reach Newel and see the samalaboogaslawa laundry mat on the next block, I am home.

I know that the moment I get on the L train heading towards bedford ave, I will be in a sea of hipsters.

I know that on saturdays and sundays if you walk around williamsburg you will find some of the best farmers and artist markets.

I know that 9 times out of 10 the conversation in passing will be in polish and I will feel like I'm in a different country.

I know that whenever someone new comes over to my apt. without fail they will ask "I feel like I am falling over when I walk, is this apartment slanted?" Slanted is a massive understatement.

I know that if i am walking home past ten on any given night, there will be the same gangsters in front of the deli on diamond and nassau, doing their drug deals, and blasting their thug music. It's become a sense of stability in my life.

Tomorrow this time Norman Ave will no longer be my address. I will no longer have chalkboard paint walls. I won't have to leave an hour early to get to my destination. I won't have 2 black kitties as my sleeping companions. And I won't get to call Brooklyn my hood anymore.

Tomorrow I will be the newest resident to the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
I am ecstatic to be starting a new and learning to become a true new yorker.

Due to this being my last night in the BK I took a stroll around my hood and snapped a few photos on my way.

Remember how I dog sit?

My friend is out of town at least a week out of every month and I get to go stay at her place in chelsea while she is gone to baby sit her pup's. I get to sleep in her huge beautiful bed and watch netflix on her flat screen tv. And it's conveniently located a block away from Chipotle and Pinkberry. I loooove when she needs me to stay over. She treats me so good, seriously I love this girl.

The other night she snuck me and danna lee into her fashion show she was modeling in at the MoMA. I about peed my pants when i heard it was a charity show raising money for Aids hosted by JAMES FRANCO. She took us back to where they were getting ready and i was in a sea of shirtless male models. We snuck out to the runway and to watch her and spotted James Franco himself. I also saw Lance Bass from NSYNC and Ke$ha was rumored to be there but was never spotted.

I am making her sneak me into all of her fashion shows from now on.
Having a super model as a friend has it's perks.
One of them is being able to say that to try and myself sound legit.

i am loving my time here in utah.

logan was utterly blissful.

a much needed weekend with my girls.

i was reminded how absolutely lucky i am

to have them as the examples

and role models in my life.

and yes i have been back and forth

about staying here and

never going back to NY.

but that would be giving up.

and i have realized this past week that giving up

is the easy way out and i am

seeing way to much of it around me.

the past five months i have

learned things that i could have never learned

while living in utah.

living in NY has not been easy,

but what i learned last week in a zoobies (definition 1 please) apt.

is that nothing worthwhile is ever easy.

so i will keep going,

and keep forcing myself into uncomfortable situations

because that's the only way I keep moving and growing.

and now in two days madi is putting her big girl pants on

and is heading back to the place where she will

My dear friend Matt Sundin was so kind to let me tag team film and edit this "modern varitey show" with him for Rue Magazine. The magazine was doing a piece on turning a normal reception into a Modern Variety Show which included a magician, a jazz band, a personal painter, and a photobooth.

I didn't care very much for the song choice but its whats we had to work with so..

My visit to utah was a surprise for my family and this past month since I booked my ticket has been the longest of my life. I was giddy all month waiting for this reaction.

Short version. I hid in the basement, skyped my family, grabbed my niece hadley, held her up to the camera and waited for a reaction.

Surprising people has got to be up there on my "all time greatest things in life" list.

It was my 16th birthday. I was so excited to go and get my license, finally I was old enough to drive. You are required to bring you're Birth Certificate with you to the DMV so I sat on my parents floor going through all of the important documents trying to find my own. And that's where it happened. That spot on the floor next to my mom's side of the bed is where my whole world would change.

You see, my birthday is on the nineteenth of may. For my whole life it always had been. I think it gives kids a sense of stability in their lives having one birthday on the same day, once every year.

Boom. Kaput. There it all went out the window staring at that piece of paper.

This just turned my hypothesis of me being adopted into an actual theory. I had my suspicions being ten times taller than anyone in my family but it's now a proven fact. My parents "whaaa you're not adopted" answers and awkward glances after being questioned don't fool me anymore!

So really what I am trying to say is thanks mom and dad. Thanks for at least waiting until I was the mature age of 16 to drop that bomb on me. Therapy hasn't been too bad and my insurance covers most of it. And besides having to remember to write the 18th as my birthday on every legal document in fear of the government thinking I stole some dead woman's identity, its turned out to be a really great thing. I get to party non stop for two days instead of just one like all you sad suckas and i get to use the "its my birthday i do and buy what i want" for a whole 24 more hours.

And I would have to say that based on what i ate tonight, it has been a very very happy legal birthday.

If you haven't heard yet, my roommate and best friend who started this adventure out here with me will be leaving me in one week from today. She found out a few nights ago that she got a shnazzy job at a news station in colorado and will be starting a new chapter in her life there.

My feelings on the whole thing? I feel like my comfort blanket (aka shanny) is being pulled out from under me. Sad in the aspect that I don't get to be with my best friend everyday anymore. Scary thinking about being out here without any piece of home surrounding me. But wonderful that I am being given another chance to force myself into new surroundings where i can grow even more.

In the next month or two I will hopefully moving out of brooklyn and into the city. I have loved living in Brooklyn and would gladly stay if it weren't for the fact that every single soul I know out here lives in the city and it takes me at least an hour to get to any of them. Isolated and Shannon-less is not what i want to be.

It's amazing how fast life changes eh?

This was my first major league baseball game and I can now say baseball is my favorite sport to watch. I like basketball games but start to get bored after so many times back and forth across the court. And BYU football games with my dad are pretty high up there in my "Loving sports" category. But this baseball game brought out of me a whole new love that I didn't know was even there.

And one of the best parts is at the end of the game they play Frank Sinatra New York, New York and everyone dances around (okay maybe just me) and you have one of those surreal moments of saying to yourself "Do I really live in NY? Is this real life??"

I can honestly say this was one of the best experiences i've had since living out here. I had chills the whole time and cried while listening to the stories of the lost loved ones. It was a very humbling experience learning of osama's death being at ground zero where it all took place and fully taking in what happened that day.

I understand that this man was responsible for killing thousands of innocent people and it was necessary for this to happen. But tell me, did anyone else feel weird about celebrating a death?

Moving away and getting a new perspective on life has been a huuuge eye opening experience for me. Yesterday at work it was slow for a couples hours and I just let myself write. Now let me explain, I am not very good at keeping a journal or writing down my thoughts when i get them so this was kind of a big deal. I wrote a whole page on everything I want to accomplish in life. I then took each of those and wrote another page on each of those goals.
I believe I wrote more yesterday than i have combined in the past year. Haha quite sad if you ask me.

I wrote about when I'm a wife, I want to be that couple even at 82 who can't get enough of each other.
I wrote about when I am a mother, I want to teach my kids the gospel and instill in them a desire to serve.
I wrote about my desire to travel, to be apart of the different cultures, and to learn the different languages with my family so that one day my house will be filled with those memories and experiences.

Being surrounded by remarkable people is instilling in me the desire to become a remarkable person. I mean seriously, my institiue teacher works for forbes magazine. Come on, really?? These people have seen what they are capable of and are working towards becoming that.

Life is great people. Even when it feels like it isn't, it is.

Now, I am off to the farmers market in the park.

i spy a shannon drinking snapple..

I recently discovered that most of my dessert and soda cravings can be subdued by water and a piece of gum. And by the looks of my bank account I've been forcing stride in my mouth every 3.5 seconds.

How i wish I could stop at that deli I walk past everyday on my way home and purchase that ben and jerry's half baked sitting in that freezer just sweetly calling my name.
Poor poor belly.
Sad sad bank account.

Something must be done.

I woke up this morning to someone pounding on my door and when I opened it the neighbors door across the hallway was open and a fire fighter was crawling through their window. Me and shannon opened our windows and this is what we saw..
Talk about greatest thing to wake up to.

Oh just FYI the building next doors roof was on fire. We we're wishing it was our building so we could check off our bucket list "get rescued by a fireman."

Every year i want to go so every year i plan on it. And then every year for one reason or another (work, almost making it but getting stuck in traffic, being on the oppisite end of the country etc..) i end up not being able to attend.
So i'm staying off facebook because in about 1 hour, it will look like the color festival threw up all over my news feed.

I wish i had enough creativity running through my body to make something like this. Also i very much enjoyed the song. If you liked, go here to see more happiness.

I stare at this picture multiple times a day, drooling over the colors. And then usually go and make some for myself.

I will learn french someday.

Men in cardigans? I tried to with all of my effort via skype last night, to convert my brother in law but he wasn't having it. What do i say to the male gender and cardigans? Mmmmm. Me thinks yes. There's even a blog dedicated to men in cardigans.
